Promoting Indigenous Employment with Clontarf

-18/01/2012-

Barminco has continued its active support of the Clontarf Foundation in providing training and development opportunities for young men in the mining industry with participation in two recent events hosted by the not-for-profit organisation.

Clontarf students in years 10, 11 and 12 attended the Goldfields Employment Forum, held at the Western Australian School of Mines Graduate Hall where they were introduced to the employment and training opportunities in the region.

The event began with a traditional ‘Welcome to Country’ performed by Goldfields based Academy student, Ricky Walker (Year 8). Clontarf Director Brett Thompson then highlighted the growth and success of the Clontarf Foundation as well as emphasising the benefit to students and corporate partners of events such as the Forum.

Once the formalities were done, the boys broke into small groups and took part in workshop sessions run by potential employers, including Barminco. The workshop sessions gave prospective employers the chance to meet the students, inform them of what is involved in their particular field of operation and the opportunities that may be available.

In addition to the Goldfields event, students at the Katherine based Academy visited Barminco’s Francis Creek site, 100km from Katherine, to take a look at some of the future employment options.

Barminco recently employed a graduate from the Katherine Academy and following their visit to the crushing operation some of the Clontarf boys also expressed an interest in working at the site.

Now almost 18 months into their three-year partnership with the Clontarf Foundation Barminco is proud of their contribution towards improving the health, education, life skills and employment prospects of Australia’s male Indigenous youth and continues to seek opportunities to provide students with personal and professional development.
